Our latest report from the Art Basel Miami 2012 trenches….
Number of Parties We Attended: Six
The Best Fair that Won’t Cost You A Penny: Art Basel Miami Beach’s Art Public. Outdoor sculptures, installations and a piece that’s so Miami: a sculpture of a melted snowman.
Best Food-Drink Combo: Food trucks vs. free-flowing vodka at the Absolut Block Party, in an empty lot in the Design District. We can’t get our hands on enough Ms. Cheezious grilled cheeses! (And the Le Baron DJs definitely helped with the dance vibes.)
Party That Lived Up to the Hype: The Kurt Cobain exhibit/presentation/homage, KURT, with Thurston Moore. A documentary, a choreographed dance, an homage performed by a guy that can pass for Jeff Buckley’s doppelganger, and Mr. Sonic Youth, in all of his glory. At one point fans rushed to the stage at this seats-only venue and kneeled in worship to the rock god.
Most Random Celebrity Appearance: Devandra Banhart and Henry Hopper—Dennis Hopper’s son. He actually narrated the documentary and played one of the Kurts.
The Band/Brand/Mag Combo We Can’t Believe Happened–But Are So Glad That It Did: Members of the Strokes x Carrera sunglasses x Architectural Digest. The oasis came complete with mini spas, drinks, food, and music by Nick and Fab at The Raleigh.
Best Cocktail Party Trivia We Learned: Thurston Moore’s mom went to see Gone With the Wind in the same Gusman Theater he performed in last night… in the 1940s! He’s from Coral Gables and spent a big chunk of his time onstage telling us stories about growing up in Miami. Our favorite tidbit? He stumbled upon porn for the first time through an underground comic book. So. Punk. Rock.
